Check for Rust

Is
Rust Destroying Your Frame? |
Did
you know that your DeLorean may look and drive like new, while rust slowly destroys
your frame? Your original DeLorean frame was coated with an epoxy compound to
protect it from road debris and chemicals. However, over time this epoxy breaks
down and cracks begin to form, allowing moisture to become trapped between the
coating and the metal chassis. This causes accelerated oxidation - in other
words, rust. Rust has weakened the structural integrity of some DeLoreans
to the point where they actually collapse during normal driving conditions. |

But
My Frame Looks Fine! |
Your
DeLorean frame might not look rusted, but that is because the epoxy coating
is hiding the real damage. In most cases, rusting frames are not discovered
until chunks of the coating begin to fall off, or an entire section of the frame
collapses. So even though it might not look rusted or dangerous, you could be
driving a time bomb. |

Where
should I check for rust? |
For
the best possible evaluation of your frame, contact your mechanic and have the
following areas checked. |
- Engine mount
support member.
- Front shock
towers.
- Rear shock
towers.
- Under middle
front cross members.
- Edges of
seams on the frame.

How
can I tell if I have a rust problem? |
You
can tell if you are having a problem or are going to have a problem if you or
your mechanic find any of the following conditions: |
- Missing and/or
flaking epoxy.
- Cracks in
the epoxy with brown stains.
- Brown stains
on the edges of the metal or welds.

Shock Tower Damage |

Note:
You or your mechanic should ensure that the epoxy is firmly adhered to the metal
and not just a shell over the metal. If this is the case, then this condition
may mean that hidden rust is developing. Also, if the epoxy seems raised, have
a portion removed. this will help determine the extent of the rust damage. (Do
not worry about removing the epoxy. If it is loose then the damage is already
done to the frame). |
